I created a survey to send to my class and other people who will be viewing my documentary. The purpose of this is to help me to plan my documentary and to be sure I can cater my final product towards the right audience.
The first question asked in the survey is age. Although the brief states an age range it is still a good question as it helps to narrow the age group down a little more. For example, everyone that completed the survey are between the ages of 16-18 which means they are most likely in education which could be an important factor to keep in mind when creating the documentary. This is important because people in education have to use technology for school and this can be compared to older generations who did not have access to such materials.
Asking if the person watches the BBC is an integral question since the client for this documentary is the BBC. 60% of people who completed the survey do not which is okay because the documentary which will be created could be a way to draw them in.
Since the entire concept is to make a documentary, asking if any of the people watch documentaries is a important question as it determines how difficult it will be to draw people in. Luckily the majority do watch documentaries which means it will be slightly easier to draw them in as it is something they already have an interest in.
The people who completed the survey had very different answers to this question. Two people simply do not watch documentaries and the other three people have varied answers such as music, nature and history based documentaries. Since the only people that had the same answer were the people who simply don't watch documentaries that means the best option is to pick between the other three options. However, there are ways to incorporate two of the ideas together for example, music and history are two subjects that can go together very well.
As can be assumed from looking at the answers to the previous question only one of the people that took the survey has watched a music documentary before. The reason this question was asked is because the idea for the documentary is music based and has been since the start.
This questions purpose was to get an idea as to what type of documentary around this topic they like so I could make something similar however the documentaries given are ones that are based around a specific artist and they star the artist which isn't something that's possible for me to do but I can try to talk about a few specific artists in my documentary.
This was a more risky question since if the audience weren't interested in music I would have to change what my documentary was centered around but thankfully the majority of people said they would be interested and so I am able to fulfill my original plan.
Those were all the questions in the survey and they helped greatly with narrowing down who the audience for this documentary will be.
