Rationale feedback

Image
I created a survey to send to the people I showed my survey to ask for their feedback. This helps me to see what I did well and what I could improve upon. The people I pitched my idea to were also within my target audience and so that makes their feedback extremely important.  The first question I asked was what the participants thoughts were on the layout of my pitch. All three of them seemed to enjoy it, specifically the colours I used which was a few shades of purple. The next thing I asked was whether or not my pitch was enjoyable and all three participants said that it was which is very good to know since a lot of time was spent making this pitch. I next asked what I could do to improve my pitch and make my product the best that it can be. The responses were similar in that I did not explain everything in a lot of depth. The first person said I need to explain my ideas in more depth which I am assuming is about my ideas for the actual documentary and that is something that is ...

Rationale

Here is my pitch for my documentary. The purpose of creating this pitch is to show it to a select few people and collect feedback to see what parts of my ideas work and what parts I need to change and improve.

Audience research

Image
I created a survey to send to my class and other people who will be viewing my documentary. The purpose of this is to help me to plan my documentary and to be sure I can cater my final product towards the right audience. The first question asked in the survey is age. Although the brief states an age range it is still a good question as it helps to narrow the age group down a little more. For example, everyone that completed the survey are between the ages of 16-18 which means they are most likely in education which could be an important factor to keep in mind when creating the documentary. This is important because people in education have to use technology for school and this can be compared to older generations who did not have access to such materials. Asking if the person watches the BBC is an integral question since the client for this documentary is the BBC. 60% of people who completed the survey do not which is okay because the documentary which will be created could be a way to...

Existing project research

Tiger King From watching Tiger King I think it is a poetic documentary or possibly expository. The reason for this is because I suppose it is up to the viewer to find their own interpretation or opinion on it but it could also be expository since it is a retelling of events that happened to Joe Exotic and Carol Baskin and the big cats that they kept. Blackfish I believe Blackfish is also and expository documentary as it tells the story of Tilikum the killer whale and what he did but also a deep dive into the mistreatment of these animals that are held captive in enclosures that are much too small for a creature of their size. Miss Americana This one is slightly more observational, it takes a look at Taylor Swift and what her life is like and there are a lot of clips of her writing and recording music along with a collaboration that she recorded with another well known musician.  BLACKPINK THE MOVIE This documentary is about the popular K-pop group, Blackpink. It includes interviews...

Documentary types

Poetic A poetic documentary is when it is up to the viewer to find meaning in it. This type relies heavily on imagery and viewer opinion. This is a much more creative approach to take when creating a documentary. A lot of research still has been done when planning on making this type of documentary. There are no interviews in this type of documentary, the actors have to pretend that the camera isn't there which means it is likely to take longer to film. Expository Expository  documentaries is the most common type. The point of these is to be factual and to portray events such as historical or wildlife events. For example, David Attenborough documentaries fall under this categories. An important thing to note in this type of documentary is that they have a voice of God type narration. The subject always have to be clear, logical and factual. Participatory In this type of documentary the documentary maker is very hands on with the topic they are talking about. For example, if they ar...

Innovative technology research

INSTA360 Insta360 cameras are something I myself have used in the past and they are a very helpful piece of technology. They are very small making them portable and easy to use on the go. They could easily be important for the future of technology as they offer a much larger frame then any other camera. Obviously, with a 360 camera you can film all around you in one shot but with any other camera it is a lot more difficult to do that. I'm not aware of any mainstream movies that have used 360 cameras but I know they have been used in youtube videos a lot.  Drones Drones are a piece of technology that is already extremely popular and has been used in large mainstream movies such as James Bond. Since they are already an important part of film making so I'm sure it will continues to be just as important if not more so. Phone Cameras Phone cameras have been used for a long time and all though they aren't usually used for big projects such as movies as there wouldn't be eno...

Client Research

BBC The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) was founded on the 18th of October 1992 by Lord John Reith. John Reith came up with the three Reithian principles which the BBC still use today, these principles are to inform, educate and entertain and shows can use one or all of these principles. The BBC always put their audience first and this is shown by the fact that they only advertise their own shows, the reason for this is that the BBC is funded by TV licenses which everyone who has a TV and watches television such as the BBC or ITV has to pay for one. TV licenses cost £159 a year and that is how they get their money making there not be a need for advert that gain them revenue and it makes the experience of watching the BBC more enjoyable. Due to government regulations the BBC cannot compete with other broadcasters for the same audience meaning that the BBC has to appeal to a more niche audience for example with strictly come dancing, ballroom dancing is a very niche form of ...

Interpreting the brief

The brief states that the client is the BBC and continues to give the context that BBC Three and BBC England are going to be collaborating to launch something called Northern Voices. This means that in terms of research I will be looking into the core values of the BBC and what kind of programmes they show along with research into what programmes BBC Three shows and the timeline of how they went from being on TV to only being available online and so on. Another thing to look into is Northern Voices such as what it is and why it is relevant to this project. This is all relevant to help find out who I will be creating my final product for and give me a better idea on how to make it suitable for the BBC. The brief then states that the requirement for this project is to create a 'short documentary film'. Already knowing that this entire project is based on culture in the digital age that helps narrow things down immediately. So the baseline ideas are to possibly interview people on...
